Seun Kuti Claims MKO Abiola Framed Fela Kuti for Armed Robbery In a startling revelation, Seun Kuti, the son of the legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, has accused the late MKO Abiola and his wife, Simbiat, of framing his father for armed robbery during Nigeria’s military regime under Muhammadu Buhari.

The Allegation Against Fela Kuti

Seun Kuti disclosed that Abiola and Simbiat alleged Fela had stolen their Ferrari at gunpoint. During Buhari’s rule, with Tunde Idiagbon as the Deputy Head of State, laws were stringent, and armed robbery was a capital offense.

Seun Kuti stated in a live Instagram session:

“Abiola and his wife, Simbiat, lied against Fela that he and his boys robbed her of her Ferrari at gunpoint under Idiagbon’s regime. This was Abiola and his wife’s plan to kill my dad because, under Idiagbon, armed robbery was punishable by death.”

Fela Kuti’s Narrow Escape

Luckily for Fela, he was performing in Cameroon at the time the Abiolas reported the crime to the police. This alibi saved him from being wrongfully executed, as Seun emphasized that Fela couldn’t be in two places at once.

Fela Kuti’s Response

Fela, along with his elder son Femi Kuti, responded to this grave accusation in a rather unorthodox manner. They smeared Abiola’s house with buckets of faeces as a form of protest and retribution. Seun elaborated:

“Fela and my elder brother, Femi, took 12 buckets of faeces and smeared it all over Abiola’s house. Listen to Fela’s song ‘Give Me Shit, I Give You Shit’ for a better understanding.”

Aftermath and Police Involvement

The following day, the police arrived at Fela’s residence to investigate the incident at Abiola’s house. Fela denied the act, saying that given the opportunity, he would have done it himself openly.

The Larger Impact

This revelation adds a new layer to the complex history of Fela Kuti, MKO Abiola, and the turbulent period of Nigeria’s military regime. The accusation not only sheds light on the personal vendettas and political maneuverings of the time but also underscores the resilience and defiance of Fela Kuti, an artist who never shied away from confronting oppression.
