Tensions Rise in Iree Community as New Aree Disputes Title

Renewed controversy has erupted in the Iree community of Boripe Local Government Area in Osun State, following the appointment of Oba Muritala Oyelakin as the new Aree of Iree. Oba Oyelakin has firmly asserted his authority, labeling anyone laying claim to his title as an impostor.

The discord stems from Governor Ademola Adeleke’s decision to remove Oba Ademola Ponnle, appointed by his predecessor, on the grounds of improper nomination. In his place, Oba Oyelakin was appointed as the rightful king. However, Oba Ponnle maintains his stance, asserting his continued kingship.

In an interview with The Nation, Oba Oyelakin emphasized his legitimacy, stating, “Anyone purporting to hold my title as Aree is a fraudster.” He pointed out that the former king cannot display the title of Aree of Iree on his number plate, reaffirming his position as the recognized ruler of the community.

Meanwhile, Oba Ponnle declined to comment extensively on the matter but reiterated his status as the reigning king. He emphasized his commitment to serving his subjects, urging politicians not to withhold relief materials from the less privileged.

As tensions persist, the community remains divided, with both claimants to the throne asserting their authority.
