Tragic Kogi Road Accident: 13 Dead, 2 Injured

13 burnt to death, two injured in Kogi road accident

Tragic Kogi Road Accident: 13 Dead, 2 Injured. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reported that 13 individuals lost their lives while two others sustained injuries in a tragic road accident in Kogi State.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Mr. Samuel Oyedeji, the Kogi FRSC Sector Commander, disclosed this information on Monday, stating that the incident occurred at approximately 7:30 pm on Sunday.

Oyedeji clarified that the accident, involving a commercial Sharon bus and an articulated cement truck, occurred near Obajana Market along Obajana-Lokoja Road in Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi.

He mentioned that the Sharon bus was parked behind a truck near the market for passengers to make purchases when the cement truck, having lost its brake, collided with it from the rear.

“As soon as the truck collided with the bus, it caught fire and engulfed almost all the passengers inside,” Oyedeji explained.

He further noted that the bus, two trucks, and a motorcycle were all burnt in the incident. The bus was reportedly en route to Abuja from the southern part of the country.

“Our rescue personnel, alongside Red Cross Nigeria and Police officers, were unable to control the fire due to its intensity,” Oyedeji added.

He mentioned that they recovered the charred remains of the victims, while they took the two injured individuals to Fisayo Hospital, Obajana, for medical treatment.

Oyedeji expressed concern over the refusal of hospitals in Kogi to accept the charred bodies for preservation, stating that authorities might resort to mass burial if no relatives claim them.

Describing the incident as “tragic and regrettable,” the sector commander urged motorists to avoid speeding and ensure proper maintenance of their vehicles.

He advised motorists to conduct thorough checks on their vehicles before embarking on journeys to prevent road accidents.
